Conifers

Abies nordmanniana Nordmann Fir -Densely foliaged coniferous tree that grows to 50-75 feet tall in cultivation. An ornamental tree that will grow long term in containers. An excellent Christmas tree. 10 inches tall in 2 gallon pots. $6.00

Metasequoia glyptostroboides Dawn redwood- This unique tree is a deciduous conifer that first turns bronze and then sheds its needles in the fall. In the spring the tree is a bright green as new needles emerge. Fast growing in good conditions. 2 foot tall. 1 gallon pot for $5.00

Sequoiadendron giganteum Giant Sequoia- Fast growing tree. Likes deep, well drained soils. Does well in the Pacific Northwest. $4-$10 depending on size.

Deciduous Trees

Acer buergerianum Trident Maple- Rounded tree that achieves a height of 20-25 feet. Three lobed leaves that show fall color that varies from yellow to red. Older bark flakes. Used for bonsai and in small gardens. 4 feet tall. 1 gallon pot for $4.00

Acer capillipes Snakebark Maple- New growth is red. The older bark is brown with white stripes. This decorative tree reaches a height of 30 feet.  5 to 6 feet tall lightly branched in 1 gallon pots. $10.00

Acer griseum Paperbark Maple- Slow growing tree to 30 feet tall. Great tree for small gardens. Fall color is orange to red. The most outstanding feature of this tree is peeling reddish orange bark. 2 feet tall in 1 gallon pots. $8.00

Acer japonicum 'Attaryi' Fullmoon Maple- Fall color is yellow to orange. Reaches 30 feet height. 4 feet tall  in 1 gallon pots. $24.00

Amelanchier x 'Autumn Brilliance' Serviceberry-  A great multipurpose tree. Noninvasive roots and a height of up to 25 feet make it a good tree to garden under. The edible fruit is enjoyed by birds and humans. The foliage turns orange red in the fall. 2 feet tall 2 gallon pots. $6.00

Cercidiphyllum japonicum Katsura Tree- This slow growing tree is excellent as a specimen tree. Multi-trunked specimens are especially ornamental. The rounded leaves turn brilliant colors in the fall. Best in growth is achieved in a sheltered site in full sun with regular water. Leaves smell like burnt sugar in fall. 3 feet tall in 3 gallon pots. $8.00

Chionanthus retusus Chinese Fringe Tree- Usually grown as a large shrub or small tree. In spring it produces white flower clusters somewhat like lilac bushes. The grey brown bark is ornamental. Hardy and disease resistant. 1 foot tall in 1 gallon pots. $4.00

Cornus kousa 'Gold Star' Dogwood- Kousa dogwoods are resistant to diseases that affect other dogwoods. The leaf has a large patch in the center that turns pink in the fall. 2 feet tall. Well branched in large pots. $30.00

Cornus kousa 'Radiant Rose' Dogwood- Kousa dogwoods are resistant to diseases that affect other dogwoods. The flowers of this cultivar are pink. 5 feet tall. Well branched in large pots. $50.00

Magnolia macrophylla Big Leaf Magnolia- The most striking feature of this tree is the leaves that can be up to three feet long. The white fragrant flowers can be up to a foot across. The one foot tall specimen in my garden produced a large bloom its' first year. 2 foot tall in 3 gallon pots. $12.00

Magnolia salicifolia 'Lufer' Willow Leaf Magnolia- Slow growing tree to 18-30 feet tall. Graceful appearance with white flowers in early spring. 3-4 feet tall. $35.00

Magnolia sprengeri 'Eric Savill'- Fragrant reddish purple blossoms bloom later in the spring which helps to avoid frost damage. The large leaves can be up to six inches long. 2 feet tall in 2 gallon pots. $14.00

Parrotia persica- This slow growing tree is native to Iran. Spring foliage is reddish purple changing to dark green. Fall color starts out yellow and then changes to red. Although the tree can reach 30 feet it is often seen at much smaller heights. As the tree ages the bark sheds in patches. 8 to 12 inches tall in 1 quart pots. $5.00

Ferns

Athyrium Filex-Femma 'Victoriae' Lady Fern- Although this fern can tolerate full sun it grows best in moist shade. It has a unique crested frond. It grows 2-3 feet tall depending on conditions. 1 gallon pots are $4

Dryopteris erythrosora 'Autumn Fern'- Semi-evergreen. In spring the fronds are a mix of copper, pink and yellow. In the fall the fronds turn a reddish brown. Lovely in all seasons. Prefer moist soils but can tolerate drier conditions. Can take full sun if  kept moist. Grows to 2 feet tall. 1 gallon for $4

Matteuccia struthipteris 'Ostrich Plume Fern'- This is one of my favorite ferns. It grows to 6 feet tall it moist soils. Can sucker to form colonies. 1 gallon for $4

Osmunda Regalis 'Purpurascens' Purple Stemmed Royal Fern- This imposing fern deserves the name royal. Tolerant of full sun if given adequate moisture. Thrives near ponds as it can grow in mud. The fronds emerge purplish in the spring and the stem remains purple all summer. 

 

 

 

Shrubs

Corylopsis pauciflora Buttercup Winter Hazel- Attractive yellow flowers on bare branches in spring. Moderate growing to 4-6 feet tall. Doesn't become unruly like forsythia. Thrives in part sun or shade. 1-2 feet high in 2 gallon pots. $6.00

Ilex verticillata 'Maryland Beauty' Winterberry- This deciduous holly thrives in wet soils. Can spread by suckers to form a nice clump. This cultivar is compact with clusters of red berries persisting until spring against the bare branches. Does not have berries without a male pollinator. 1 gallon $4.00

Ilex verticillata 'Southern Gentleman' Winterberry- Male pollinator. One male can pollinate up to 6 females. 1 gallon pots $4.00

Quercus dentata 'Pinnatifida' Cutleaf Emperor Oak- A must have for the plant collector. This rare oak grows into a large shrub. The leaves that can grow up to 12" long are finely divided. In youth the tree can look sparse but as it ages it becomes fuller. 5 gallon pot for $70

Perennials

Paeonia tenuifolia Fernleaf Peony- This is an exceedingly rare peony. Unlike normal peonies it has finely divided foliage. In spring it is topped with dark red flowers. Care is the same as for regular peonies and it is quite hardy. 2 gallon pots $20

Pyrethrum roseum Painted Daisy- This cheery plant grow 2-3 feet tall. It has a range of bright colors with hot pink being the most common. 1 gallon pots are $4.00

Wyethia augustifolia Narrowleaf Mule Ears- Native plant that is rarely seen in this area. There is a population in the Boistfort Valley. Grows to 1 foot tall with 3 inch yellow sunflower like flowers. Best on well drained soil. 1 gallon pots for $5.00
